Google’s Android OS continues to make great strides in development and their latest development branch code-named Cupcake’ is showing fantastic promise. A task manager, world time, improved animations and critically, a virtual keyboard so that the user doesn’t have to slide out the G1 everytime to type.

You can’t help but wonder if Marissa Mayer, Google’s Vice President of Search Product and User Experience had a hand in some of the usability improvements being pursued within this release. After all, she is Google’s number one Cupcake fan :).

On another note, Apple had an amazing quarterly report - destroying earnings and revenue targets. But even more interesting is the call transcript where Tim Cook, the COO of Apple says:
We are watching the landscape. We like competition, as long as they don’t rip off our IP. And if they do, were going to go after anybody that does.

I wonder if that was a thinly veiled warning to Android’s team and their approach to achieving multi-touch?

Should be interesting to see how this plays out, compelling stuff!
